TASKS ABOUT THE COPEPOD

The species of copepod living in the Disko Bay and the Icefjord is called Calanus. There are many other species of this multicellular organism.

Calanus is almost twice the size of other species, which is fortunate, being central to the arctic food web.

  • What does the concept species mean?

  • Why is it fortunate that the species Calanus is big and fat?

  • The copepod is a multicellular animal – meaning what?

Ice algae have adapted to the very cold life under the ice so that they can perform photosynthesis with even very little sunlight.

Besides the ice algae growing right under the ice there is also phytoplankton suspended in the water. They too conduct photosynthesis.

  • What is photosynthesis?

  • If ice algae had not adapted so that they can conduct phosynthesis even with very little sunlight – what would happen to the arctic food web?

  • What does it mean that an organism adapts to its environment?
